Insider Tips for Flying at Peak Times

February 7, 2012  |  Travel Booking and Tips

Holidays are a great time to get away. But they’re also when we see the heaviest demand for private jet charter. That’s why XOJET and most other private aviation providers consider the days before and after a holiday or a major event (such as the Super Bowl) as “peak days.”

Matt Rehm, XOJET’s Director of Charter Sales, has four simple tips to getting the private flight you want at peak times.

1. Book your flight in advance.

This tip seems like a no-brainer, but Rehm says, “You’d be surprised at how many people try to book a Christmas Eve flight on December 23.” The best way to get the exact flight you want is to plan ahead. Rehm recommends booking at least 90 days before your departure date. (Note that if you participate in XOJET’s Coast2Coast or Membership Programs, you have guaranteed availability no matter when you fly, with no peak-day restrictions.) Of course, we’ll always do the best we can to book your desired dates and times.

2. Be creative with your calendar.

If you’re flying to one of the big destination areas of the Caribbean, Mexico, Hawaii or Rocky Mountain ski resorts, you’ll get the best value by either flying in when everybody’s leaving, or by flying out when everybody’s arriving. Often, no one has booked that particular leg of the flight, so you can get a discount on flying privately. After all, the jet has to go there anyway.

3. Remember that smaller is sometimes better (and less busy).

You’ll realize even more value and convenience if you can be flexible on your departure and destination airports. Busy airports—such as Chicago O’Hare (ORD), Los Angeles International (LAX), New York John F. Kennedy International (JFK), and San Francisco International (SFO)—require slot reservations for landings and take-offs. They also add fuel surcharges that smaller airports don’t. Land just a few miles away and you easily avoid those extra charges or the need for a slot reservation. And your XOJET private aviation consultant can arrange for ground transportation to take you wherever you want to go.

4. Be flexible on which aircraft you fly.

Last but not least, flexibility in the type of private aircraft you fly can save you money and increase the number of flights available to you—without requiring you to make any tradeoffs in safety or comfort. For example, every XOJET Challenger 300 and Citation X jet is custom configured to our specifications with complimentary Wi-Fi Internet access, free satellite phone usage and upgraded sound dampening. XOJET is also increasing its fleet with new Challenger 300 and Hawker 800XP aircraft, giving you even more opportunities to fly on the XOJET fleet when you want.

So what’s the bottom line when it comes to chartering a private jet on “peak days”? Says Rehm: “The best value comes with flexibility.”
